Technology Incubators and Co-Location Facilities

Program Purpose
New York State is home to over 80 incubator and co-location facilities, in every region of the state, including the oldest incubator in the nation- the Batavia Industrial Center in the Finger Lakes. These include technology-specific facilities for life science companies and broad-based business incubation centers.

There are more than 1,000 business incubators in North America, up from only 12 in 1980. The incubation model has been adapted to meet a variety of needs, from fostering commercialization of university technologies to increasing employment in economically distressed communities to serving as an investment vehicle.

Critical to the definition of an incubator is the provision of management guidance, technical assistance, and consulting tailored to young growing companies.

New York State has seen a steady increase in the number of business and technology incubators in operation. These incubators host more than 600 companies, and occupy more than 3.6 million square feet of space. The incubators support companies that employ more than 4,000 workers.

There is a strong link between NYSTAR's mission to foster economic growth and opportunity through strategic investments and incubators in New York. Fully one-third of all existing incubators are associated with a university or college in New York and one-quarter of all incubators have a high-technology focus.
