Empire State Development Announces Completion of $2.1 Million Affordable Housing Development for Veterans in Suffolk County

November 10, 2021

Project Provides 14 New Homes for First Time Homebuyers

Empire State Development today announced the completion of the $2.1 million Columbia Terrace Veteran Condos, an affordable housing development in Huntington, Suffolk County, providing 14 new homes with a preference for first time homebuyers. As part of the project, each homeowner will receive affordable mortgage products and down payment assistance.

Empire State Development Chief Operating Officer and Executive Deputy Commissioner Kevin Younis said, “The Columbia Terrace Veteran Condos project is the latest example of Governor Hochul’s and ESD’s commitment to growing economic opportunity for all New Yorkers through strategic investments in affordable housing. Made possible by the Restore New York Communities Initiative, this project will provide safe, reliable homes for New York’s veterans— helping create a thriving, vibrant community in Suffolk County for decades to come.”

About Columbia Terrace Veteran Condos

The project involved rehabilitating the interior and exterior of two properties: 1 Tower Street, which had been vacant, as well as demolition and new construction at Railroad Street in Huntington. This project was made possible through a $1.56 million grant from Empire State Development, including $1.17 million through the state’s Restore New York Communities Initiative, which will assist in keeping the new housing affordable.

Senator Jim Gaughran said, “"After bravely serving our country, too many veterans return home and struggle to find affordable housing. As home to one of the largest veterans' populations in the nation, I am thrilled Suffolk County can welcome this new affordable housing community."

Assembly Member Steve Stern said, "I am proud to join with my colleagues as we cut the ribbon on this beautiful new Veterans Affordable Housing development in Huntington Station. As a member of the New York State Veterans' Affairs Committee, I have the privilege of working with and for the brave men and women who sacrifice so much to protect our great nation and with their families. The transition from military service to civilian life poses many challenges, including access to affordable housing. This project is a critical step in meeting this challenge and I thank my partners in state and local government for their tireless work to ensure that we always provide meaningful support to those who protect our freedom and our way of life."

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said, “With more than 90,000 veterans residing right here in Suffolk County, it is our job to ensure that these local heroes have a safe, reliable place to call home. Suffolk County is proud to support this new condo development, which will make affordable homeownership a reality for our veterans, who put their lives on the line for our freedoms.”

Huntington Town Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci said, "After much work and anticipation, the Offering Plan for Columbia Terrace has been approved, and we will soon be able to see first-time veteran homebuyers move in to call these condos home. If you are a veteran and qualified to apply, we strongly encourage you to do so. This is one of very few, if not the only multiple affordable housing dwelling specifically for veterans in Suffolk County, which is home to the largest veterans population in New York."
