The aerospace, beauty and music industries are bringing hundreds of jobs and building the tech economy in New York State – with announcements so far this year by three digital businesses announcing plans to open and expand their operations in New York City. The company commitments reflect the strength of New York State’s creative business incentives and programs as well as its diverse and talented workforce.
In a major expansion, Spotify, an award-winning digital music service with a multi-industry footprint that includes software development and social media, will move its U.S. headquarters to 4 World Trade Center, creating 1,000+ jobs and retaining 832 jobs. The added jobs will represent software engineering and product teams, label and artist relations, editorial, business, legal and finance sectors. The move makes 4 World Trade Center the first office tower on the 16-acre World Trade Center site to be fully leased. The Governor announced the move on Feb. 15.
Spotify emblemizes the growth in New York State’s tech economy, joining companies including Snapchat, Warby Parker and BuzzFeed, that are creating innovative jobs here.
United Technologies Corporation (UTC) has chosen Brooklyn as home for its groundbreaking digital accelerator, which will serve as a hub for development of software and analytics to grow UTC’s commercial building and aerospace products and services. ESD made the announcement on March 20. The Fortune 50 company, with more than $57 billion in net sales and close to 200,000 employees worldwide, consists of four global franchises that are industry leaders: Otis Elevator, Pratt & Whitney, UTC Climate, Controls & Security and UTC Aerospace Systems.
United Technologies has a long history of New York-based innovation, starting in 1853, when Elisha Graves Otis invented the safety elevator, and continuing with the creation of modern air conditioning by Willis Carrier in 1902.
Glossier, a New York City-based digital beauty brand, will grow that brand with an expansion of their headquarters and relocation to a 26,000-square-foot space in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood. The move, announced on April 13, will create 282 jobs.
Since its 2014 launch, Glossier – born of a beauty blog with 1.5 million monthly visitors – has raised more than $40 million in venture capital funding and has been named one of the Top 50 Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company magazine.
