Visionary Voices spotlights Uncaged Innovations, a New York–based biomaterials company redefining the future of premium materials through sustainable, animal-free innovation. Led by Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Downs, the company is pioneering next-generation, bio-based leather alternatives engineered to deliver the performance, beauty, and scalability required by the global fashion, footwear, and automotive industries.

Scaling Animal-Free Leather from Lab to Market

For more than two decades, Downs has built companies at the intersection of purpose and scale. With Uncaged Innovations, that journey has led to an ambitious mission-based challenge: creating premium, high-performance leather alternatives that spare both animals and the environment. Co-founded with biomaterials scientist Dr. Xiaokun Wang, the company is translating advanced materials research into commercially viable products designed for the world’s leading fashion, footwear, and automotive brands. As Uncaged Innovations moves from laboratory breakthrough to industrial readiness, it reflects a broader shift in which a New York–based innovation is helping redefine how everyday materials are made – away from the significant environmental costs of traditional leather production, which include: using large amounts of water; contributing to deforestation for cattle farming; and contaminating waterways through the release of toxic chemicals during the tanning process.

The Founder's Journey

Stephanie is a serial entrepreneur focused on building mission-driven companies that can scale. I founded my first company in 1999, then went on to create FiXiT, a nonprofit addressing pet overpopulation, and later helped build Good Dot, one of India’s largest plant-based meat companies.

In 2020, she co-founded Uncaged Innovations with Dr. Xiaokun Wang, whose deep biomaterials expertise helped us rethink what “leather” can be without animals and without the plastic-heavy compromises that have dominated alternatives.

What inspired you to start Uncaged Innovations?

I’ve cared about animal welfare and the environment for as long as I can remember, and leather sits at the center of both challenges. Conventional leather is tied to animal-dependent agriculture and an intensive, chemical-heavy production process.

We started Uncaged to prove that premium materials can be made differently: with bio-based inputs, engineered performance, and true scalability.

Biggest challenge solved or something learned along the way?

The biggest challenge has been translating breakthrough materials science (a hallmark of deep tech, where innovations are rooted in scientific firsts) into consistent, scalable production. One lesson: you don’t win deep tech by having the best idea: you win by obsessing early on over repeatability, quality, and manufacturability

That’s why moments like our first successful roll-to-roll trial production run (creating as much bio-based material as in a roll of leather) were so meaningful. It signaled we were moving from innovation to commercial readiness.

Recent milestone or win you’re proud of?

What’s next in the coming months?

The focus is execution: scaling our color offerings, expanding commercial partnerships, and bringing our solution into more end products across categories where durability and aesthetics matter – from fashion and footwear to automotive interiors.

How has NY Ventures impacted your experience starting a business in New York State?

NY Ventures’ Pre-Seed and Seed Matching Fund Program, supported by the federal State Small Business Credit Initiative, has strengthened our ability to build and scale in New York; not just as the place we are headquartered, but as a place where advanced materials and cleaner manufacturing can thrive. Having a New York State as partner, through this program and NYSTAR Innovation Matching Grants, shows that this kind of innovation belongs here and can create high-quality jobs and industrial leadership across the state.

Outside of work, favorite way to spend time in New York State?

Whenever I can, I love getting outside with my two rescue pups. I love long walks that clear my head, time in nature Upstate, and small resets that remind me why building lower-impact materials matters.
