Empire State Development Announces Wines From Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyards Exported To Puerto Rico

Connoisseurs Cheer and Sommeliers Show Spiritedness as the New York State Office of Trade and Tourism and V. Suárez & Co. Uncork Wine-derful Partnership in Puerto Rico

Empire State Development (ESD) today announced that wines from Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard, one of the state's most acclaimed wineries, are now officially available in Puerto Rico. The two Riesling wines are being exported through a distribution partnership with V. Suárez & Co., one of the island’s leading beverage importers. The partnership marks a significant milestone in strengthening trade relations and cultural ties between Puerto Rico and New York State, and was made possible through the New York State Office of Trade and Tourism in Old San Juan.

Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight said, "Thanks to this new partnership between Wiemer Vineyards and V. Suárez & Co., one of New York's premier wineries is introducing its world-class products to an entirely new market. This is great news for our state's wine industry, which sustains local farms and agriculture jobs, creates tradeable products, and supports the regional tourism economy."

This partnership follows Governor Kathy Hochul's 2023 announcement that Steuben County-based Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery had become the first New York State winery in history to export its product to Puerto Rico. New York State is one of the world's premier wine-making regions, and ranks as the third largest producer of wines in the nation. Last year, ESD announced that six New York State wineries – includes Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard – would be exported to Puerto Rico, in addition to Saratoga Water.

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard Co-Owner Oskar Bynke said, "We are honored to partner with V. Suárez to bring the Finger Lakes' finest wines to Puerto Rico. We at Hermann J. Wiemer are thrilled to now officially present our Riesling on Puerto Rican shelves, marking the first-ever presence to the island. After many years of work, facilitated by NY State Office of Trade and Tourism, our love for sustainable agriculture, fresh and vibrant Dry Riesling of the highest quality, can now be enjoyed on our favorite island!"

V. Suárez & Co. Vice President Raul Marcial said, "With a steadfast commitment to innovation that delights wine enthusiasts, we proudly introduce Hermann J. Wiemer to the table, showcasing one of the Finger Lakes' most esteemed wines."

Located along Seneca Lake in New York's Finger Lakes region, Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard was founded in 1979 and spans 90 acres. The winery embraces biodynamic farming, focusing on sustainable practices, and has been free from herbicides for over 20 years. In 2023, Wiemer was awarded a Unity Award from the New York Wine and Grape Foundation for its contributions to the image and reputation of the state's wine industry. Wiemer wines have been recognized by top industry publications and outlets, including Wine Spectator and The New York Times.

The New York State Office of Trade and Tourism is committed to offering New York State food and beverage manufacturers a new, exciting market where demand for quality products is growing. These partnerships represent another significant step forward in promoting cross-cultural exchange and economic growth, which is the mission of the New York State Office of Trade and Tourism. This demonstrates the power of public-private collaboration and a passion for showcasing exceptional products made in New York.
