Empire State Development Announces Multi-Sector Trade Mission to Mexico City and Monterrey

Global NY to Lead January 21-24 Trade Mission to Increase Exports and Foreign Direct Investment for New York Businesses; Mexico is New York’s 8th Largest Export Market

January 18, 2019

Empire State Development (ESD) today announced that Global NY, together with the Conference of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers, will lead a trade mission to Mexico from January 21-24, 2019. Each company will receive a customized schedule of B2B meetings to discuss export and business opportunities with prospective customers and business partners, and benefit from networking events and logistical support provided by Global NY’s Mexico Trade Office. Some businesses will also benefit from Global NY’s State Trade Expansion Program (STEP) for travel and lodging expenses. Global NY is New York’s portal for both foreign businesses looking to invest in New York and local businesses interested in exporting internationally. The trade mission will strengthen economic ties with Mexico by helping to increase exports, the number of businesses that export, and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in New York State.

Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Howard Zemsky said, “Mexico is an important trade partner to New York, and this upcoming economic development trade mission will strengthen our economic ties by supporting growth, job creation and innovation in both New York and Mexico.”

Participating businesses represent several different industries and regions from across the state, including Aerospace and Defense companies from the Mohawk Valley and New York City, Advanced Manufacturing companies from Long Island and Central New York and a Biotech and Life Sciences company from the Southern Tier.

STEP is a Global NY program that is funded in part through a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to increase the number of businesses entering the export market, and to increase the value of exports businesses are already producing. Grants are offered to qualifying small and medium-sized businesses for a range of different purposes, including participation in foreign trade missions.

In 2018, Global NY led 37 companies on trade missions to Mexico, Germany, Canada and China. Currently the 13th largest economy in the world, Mexico offers a strategic location and attractive business climate for New York companies looking to export into new markets. The trade mission includes stops in Mexico City and Monterrey. Global NY organizes trade missions each year to help New York’s small to mid-sized companies export overseas as well as encourage foreign companies to invest and grow their businesses in the state.
