Governor Cuomo Announces Official Grand Opening of MAGIC Spell Studios at Rochester Institute of Technology

New Building Will Converge RIT's Internationally Ranked Academic Programs in Digital Media; Investment Complements "Finger Lakes Forward" - The Region's Comprehensive Strategy to Revitalize Communities and Grow the Economy

October 30, 2018

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the grand opening of the new MAGIC Spell Studios facility on the campus of Rochester Institute of Technology. MAGIC is the university's creative approach to the convergence of digital media disciplines, including film and animation and game design and development, and is a first-of-its kind effort in higher education. The facility, a Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council priority project, will allow RIT to bring together the academic programs and high-tech experimental facilities needed for technology development and commercially viable start-up activity. The new facility is also expected to foster entrepreneurial activity for area start-up companies, retain graduates, and create an industry hub with tremendous growth potential to generate new jobs in the region.  The Governor originally announced state support for the innovative project in July of 2015, when he brought his "Capitol for Day" event to the region.

"MAGIC Spell Studio is a great example of how partnerships between academia and the public and private sectors are helping New York's innovation economy thrive." Governor Cuomo said. "This state-of-the-art studio will support the transformation of the Finger Lakes' regional economy as it continues to move forward."

"This new facility at the Rochester Institute of Technology will merge film and higher education for a unique partnership that will accelerate the industry and provide great opportunities for students," said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, who attended the grand opening. "Magic Spell Studios will create a hub for animation and design in the area, support start-up companies, and generate new jobs. This investment as part of the Regional Economic Development Councils will accelerate economic growth and innovation and continue to move the Finger Lakes forward."
