Agribusiness keeps growing in New York State thanks to resources and research

When people think of New York State, they may not think of agribusiness. Yet 23% of the state’s land area is used for farming.  The Empire State is rich with farms that produce a variety of field crops,  fruits, and an abundance of milk — all of which support our wide array of food manufacturers.  New York State’s natural resources, from forests to farms, coupled with top educational institutions including Cornell University, SUNY Cobleskill, Genesee Community College and SUNY- ESF, enable the success of our wide array of agribusinesses.

Key facts

With an abundance of farmland, New York State has a lot to offer the agribusiness industry thanks to programs and incentives supporting its wide range of growers and producers. Here’s how New York helps cultivate success:

  • 36,000 farms produce New York State’s vast array of raw products to be used in food and beverage production.
  • New York State is the second-largest producer of apples and maple syrup; second in cabbage and snap beans; third in grapes, grape juice and wine; and fourth in pears.
  • New York’s forest covers 63% of the State’s total land area, supporting the wood products industry as well as recreational opportunities; the forest sector has an economic impact of $13 billion.
  • Yogurt industry leaders Fage and Chobani have both made upstate New York home, thriving under New York State’s continued support of the yogurt and dairy industries.
  • New York State supports an ever-growing roster of craft beverage manufacturers, which currently includes 460 wineries, 278 breweries, 124 distilleries and 35 cideries. Read more about craft beverages here.

Strong incentives support agribusiness in New York State

The abundance of agriculture and agribusiness in New York State supports the state’s strong economy in many ways, including creation of new jobs and growth in tourism.

New York State works with and welcomes companies that create products from raw materials — whether food, beverages or wood — for sale here and around the world.

Our top ranking in milk production supports manufacturing of award-winning cheese and yogurt, and New York State beets and apples are among the many ingredients to successful products that get their start here. New York State timber also is a base for paper products, furniture manufacturing and flooring.
