Objective

The Minority and Women-Owned Business Investment Fund ("the Fund") is an equity investment fund that supports innovation, job creation, and high-growth entrepreneurship throughout New York State ("NYS”) by investing in early-stage NYS certified Minority and/or Women-Owned Business Enterprises (“MWBEs”) that are in emerging technologies and have a proprietary or differentiated product or service.

MWBE Fund Highlights

The MWBE Fund is a $2 million venture capital fund that invests in seed stage certified minority and women-owned business enterprises (MWBE) throughout New York State.  Excell Partners, with a successful history of investing in high-tech MWBE startup firms across NYS, was competitively selected to manage the MWBE Investment Fund.  Investments of up to $500,000 per company for general technology companies and up to $750,000 per company for life-sciences companies can be made.

Eligibility

Company Eligibility Requirements

New MWBEs that are NYS certified* (or willing to apply to be certified) that:

  • Have proprietary or differentiated innovative products, services, technologies or ideas, and
  • Are in seed to early-stage development and are characterized by high-growth rates and market potential.

* NYS certification is attainable by any for-profit firm that is at least 51  percent owned, operated and controlled by U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens who are either minorities, women, or both.
